The Analog Blog: David Mack's Infrequent Musings

When procrastination strikes, I have a blog

Putting the World in the Wide Web

A few months ago, I installed Google Analytics on my official Web site. Combined with Google's tools for webmasters, it has been a real learning experience, as I've discovered all the things I have been doing wrong all these years.

But some of what I've learned has been really fun. For starters, since November 1, 2008, there have been 1,134 unique visits to my site; even more interesting, those visitors hail from 547 cities in 45 different countries.

As one might imagine, the majority of my site's traffic (809 visits) came from the United States. But it's cool to see where the rest of it came from:

I know it shouldn't surprise me, but it just feels kind of cool to know that there are people all over the world who, through whatever combination of choice or error, have visited my web site and learned perhaps a little bit about li'l ol' me.

My New Blog

It's my own fault for believing the Chicken Littles of the Internet who told me the LiveJournal sky was falling, but I spent a good chunk of yesterday exporting my LJ content to XML and archiving it in a new, WordPress-powered blog on my own site: http://www.davidmack.pro/blog/

I have to say, after reading Allyn Gibson's many praises of WordPress, it lives up to his hype. So my first nod of thanks is to tiggerallyn, from whom I also swiped the design inspiration for my blog. (Okay, to be honest, I looked up the theme that he used, I downloaded it, and I installed it.)

My second bit of thanks go to Steve at sff.net Technical Support, who installed WordPress and had it ready for me to configure on my site within an hour of my request. The team at http://www.greyware.com/ really is top-notch.

So it seems that LJ is not simply going to vanish as I had feared. But I might start looking for ways to syndicate my new posts from LJ to my personal WP blog, so that if LJ ever does take a dirt-nap, the transition will be seamless.

Crossposting Test Number Five

This is my fifth test of crossposting from Word Press to LiveJournal, and my first test using the new beta plug-in JournalPress 0.2.

If this works, it will be at least that much more successful than either Live+Press or LJXP was for me.

If not, that will have to be the end of my tests for this evening.

ETA: It worked! Yes! This is awesome!
